At the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, a new exhibition called The Secret World of Elephants is now open. It covers the animals’ 60-million-year evolution as well as topics such as how they communicate and how they help environments. Elephants and their close relatives are part of an order of animals called proboscideans. They have been on the planet for 60 million years and lived on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. While there were once more than 200 species of proboscideans, most of them are extinct. Today, three kinds of elephants exist, and wild ones live only in Africa and Asia.
