Earthquake unearths ancient snakehead
A major earthquake in Mexico City last year revealed a giant sculpture of a snakehead that’s more than 500 years old, the country’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has announced. It was found nearly 15 feet deep, under a building at a university. Mexico City was once part of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs worshipped many gods, including Quetzalcoatl, who was often depicted as a snake. The sculpture is 5.9 feet long and 3.3 feet high and weighs about 1.3 tons. About 80% of its surface is covered in red, blue, black, and white paint.
