A South American animal took the spotlight at the biggest agricultural fair in the northeastern US. At this year’s Eastern States Exposition, also known as the Big E, 180 llamas participated in a three-day competition. Experts say interest in the animals has been on the rise. Llamas are relatives of camels and are native to the Andes Mountains, where they have helped people haul goods across steep mountainsides for hundreds of years. People first brought llamas to the US in the 19th century. Here, the animals are mainly kept as pets. Others appear at special events or act as guards to protect other farm animals from predators. At the Big E expo, owners show off their llamas’ straight backs, long necks, ability to navigate past obstacles, and friendliness to strangers.…
