Building roads that can charge cars

The world’s first public trial of a road that wirelessly charges electric vehicles (EVs) is set to take place in Germany. Currently, most people plug in their EVs at charging stations or charge them wirelessly on special parking pads. Electric cars are better for the environment because they don’t burn gasoline. But as more people own them, more charging locations will be needed for people to use when they’re away from home. The road in Balingen, Germany, will test dynamic charging, which charges a car’s battery while it is driving. It uses “magnetic resonance induction,” where copper coils built into the road send energy to a receiver in the EV as it passes over.
