With his grand, distinctive designs and his embrace of unusual materials, Frank Gehry changed the world of architecture. Early years Frank Gehry was born Ephraim Owen Goldberg in 1929 in Toronto, Canada. As a boy, he built pretend cities with pieces of wood from his grandfather’s hardware store. In 1947, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, California. In his architecture classes at Los Angeles City College, he loved the variety of possibilities in design but was not a skilled draftsman (person who makes detailed technical drawings). His teachers were encouraging, however, and modernist architect Raphael Soriano mentored him. Gehry won scholarships to the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture and graduated in 1954. He soon changed his name professionally to Frank Gehry. Path to a profession Gehry…
