Asian elephants given protection

A Bangladeshi court has banned people from capturing Asian elephants and keeping them in captivity. About 200 of the animals live in Bangladesh, but their numbers have fallen because of hunting and habitat loss. About half of the country’s elephants are living in captivity. The court’s decision could stop them from being exploited (used and treated unfairly). Before the ruling, the Bangladeshi government’s forestry department could issue licenses allowing logging companies (those that cut down trees) to capture elephants and use them to move logs. Many of these elephants were then sold to other people, even though that was not officially allowed.
