A determined birder

Peter Kaestner, age 70, of Maryland, has become the first person to document sightings of 10,000 different bird species in the wild. He achieved the record when he spotted and photographed an orange-tufted spiderhunter, a small curved-beak songbird, in the forests on the island of Mindanao, in the Philippines. Kaestner, a passionate birder since childhood, has now viewed more than 90% of Earth’s scientifically recognized birds.
