Army veterans awarded gold medal

A group of soldiers known as the “Ghost Army” received the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in Washington, DC, on March 21. The medal—the highest honor awarded by Congress, the branch of government that makes laws—pays tribute to the soldiers for helping the US win World War II (1939–1945). About 1,300 US soldiers were part of the Ghost Army, which served throughout Europe in 1944 and 1945. They were called the Ghost Army because their job was to produce fake radio messages and other sounds of war to distract enemy forces from Allied troops, which included the US Army.
