Debating Dunk’s size and shape
During the Devonian Period, about 360 million years ago, a fish called Dunkleosteus was one of the top predators in the water. Scientists have thought that Dunkleosteus was built like a shark, stretching as long as a school bus. However, new research by Russell Engelman of Case Western Reserve University, in Ohio, suggests the fish was 13 feet long at most and shaped like a tuna. “Dunk,” as the fish is known, was chunky and compact. Engelman says this build would have made Dunk an even more dangerous predator, enabling it to move fast in open water. However, other scientists caution that it is impossible as of now to be certain what this fish’s body really looked like.…
