School-grading system scrapped

On 2 September, the Government announced that Ofsted would no longer give one or two-word inspection grades for schools in England (see panel). The rule change came into effect immediately. What is Ofsted? Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. It is a Government organisation that inspects schools in England. It publishes the results of its inspections and anyone can read them online. If a report says a school needs to improve in certain areas, the school needs to tell Ofsted how it plans to do this. Ofsted can provide help and support to schools, and take action if there is no improvement.
