1972 Clive Sullivan becomes the first black captain of a major sport in the UK.

In 1972, Clive Sullivan was made captain of Great Britain’s rugby league team for the World Cup. This made him the first black captain of a national team in any major sport in the UK. Sullivan was born in Cardiff in 1943. He suffered a serious leg injury at 14 years old, but remarkably carried on his rugby career. In November 1972, Sullivan led the Great British team to victory in the Rugby League World Cup, scoring a try in each of their four games.…
