Statue celebrates historic teacher

Betty Campbell, Wales’s first black head teacher, has been honoured with a statue unveiled in the centre of Cardiff on 29 September. “She would have said, ‘Why are they making all this fuss about me?’” her daughter Elaine Clark told the BBC, “but deep down she would have appreciated it.” Campbell, who died in 2017 aged 82, was born and brought up in Cardiff. Her father was Jamaican and her mother was Welsh Barbadian. When she was at school, a teacher told Campbell that she would never rise to the top because of the colour of her skin. However, Campbell became head teacher of Mount Stuart Primary School where she taught, and stayed there for 28 years.
