Leicester lights up for Diwali

The city will be flooded with light and colour as it celebrates an important religious festival.

The city of Leicester’s famous Diwali celebrations start on 9 October with the annual switch-on of 6,000 twinkling lights on Belgrave Road, known as the Golden Mile. The event marks the beginning of lots of festivities in the English city, leading up to Diwali Day on 24 October. Expect colourful lights, dance shows, fireworks, a giant puppet parade and food stalls. Diwali is the five-day festival of lights celebrated by people across the world who practise the religions of Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. The word Diwali comes from a word in Sanskrit (an ancient Indian language) – deepavali, meaning “rows of lighted lamps”.
