Artist’s freedom statue

Samson Kambalu grew up in Malawi and has been an artist since he was seven. Now living in England, Kambalu teaches art at Oxford University and is the first African artist to unveil a sculpture on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square (an outdoor space in the centre of London). A new artwork is placed on the plinth every two years. Kambalu’s work features a statue of John Chilembwe who fought against British rule in Africa in 1915. Chilembwe wore a hat despite a rule forbidding Africans from wearing hats in front of white people.
