Black History Month is here

October is Black History Month in the UK, with events taking place to celebrate the contribution that black people have made to the UK. Black History Month was created to recognise people with African and Caribbean backgrounds but it has now expanded to include all black communities. It started in the US, where it is celebrated every February. A man called Akyaaba Addai-Sebo brought the idea to the UK, and the first Black History Month was held in London in 1987. It began as a response to racism (when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their skin colour, culture or nationality) and because black communities felt schools weren’t teaching young people enough about black history.
