On 30 September Russian president Vladimir Putin announced that four areas of Ukraine had been “annexed” and claimed that they are now officially part of Russia. What is annexation? Annexation is when one country makes another territory part of itself by force and without permission. Annexing a country or territory is against international law. Ukraine has declared that it is speeding up plans to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), a military and political alliance (partnership) of 30 countries, including the UK, the US and many European countries. Indonesian football tragedy investigated

Indonesia’s football association has launched an investigation following one of the worst sporting disasters in the country’s history. On 1 October, at least 125 people died following a football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium on the island of Java. When Arema FC lost, some supporters ran onto the pitch and clashed with police. Police fired tear gas (chemicals that irritate the eyes, lungs and skin) at them to get them off the pitch. As fans ran to escape, many were caught up in a crush. Tear gas is sometimes used by police forces, but its use inside stadiums is banned by FIFA, football’s governing body and the organisers of the World Cup. One of Asia’s top design festivals, Singapore Design Week, returned for the first time after the pandemic from 16 to 26 September. One of the festival shows, called Emerge, featured work from 55 new young design studios from south-east Asia. One of its main themes was creating products sustainably by using recycled materials. Designer Adhi Nugraha created speakers and lamps using cow dung. Although it’s a natural material, cow dung can pollute water and releases gases that contribute to climate change. Nugraha and his team washed the dung with water to get rid of the smell, then combined it with waste plastic to create their products. Government reverses tax cut

On 3 October, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (the person in charge of the UK’s money) announced that the Government would no longer be getting rid of the top rate of income tax (money paid to the Government out of people’s wages, which is used to pay for public services such as schools and hospitals). What is the top rate of income tax? It is extra tax that the country’s top earners – people who earn more than £150,000 each year – have to pay. It was introduced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2010. Young artist helps Ukraine

Makenzy Beard, a 15-year-old artist from Swansea, Wales, has raised £7,500 for people in Ukraine by selling her paintings. Her art has been getting more and more popular since she started painting in 2020 and is now on display at a gallery in Cardiff. They sell for up to £23,000 each. She told the BBC, “If I’ve been given the ability to make money that I don’t necessarily need, if I can put that somewhere good, that is something I really want to do.”…

A street in Nottinghamshire, England, has been awarded the title of “Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street” by two charities. Residents of Dale Road, Keyworth, have been drilling holes in their fences so that hedgehogs can travel safely between people’s gardens. Some gardens also have feed stations and hedgehog houses. October is Black History Month in the UK, with events taking place to celebrate the contribution that black people have made to the UK. Black History Month was created to recognise people with African and Caribbean backgrounds but it has now expanded to include all black communities. It started in the US, where it is celebrated every February. A man called Akyaaba Addai-Sebo brought the idea to the UK, and the first Black History Month was held in London in 1987. It began as a response to racism (when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their skin colour, culture or nationality) and because black communities felt schools weren’t teaching young people enough about black history. Salzburg, Austria Rare dormouse spotted after 20 years After 20 years of not being seen in the wild, a rare tree dormouse has been found in a forest in Austria. Anna-Sophie Pirtscher spotted one after searching for the species for two years. Researchers want to learn more about the species before their winter hibernation. Pirtscher told the BBC that the find felt “gigantic”. Florida, US Rescuers help after Hurricane Ian Rescue workers are helping people in Florida after Hurricane Ian swept through the US state, causing flooding and power cuts. Should factory farming be banned?

On 25 September, Switzerland voted not to ban factory farming, a form of farming where animals are kept in tightly controlled conditions and might never go outside. Many people believe that factory farming is cruel – a recent poll showed that 78% of British people are “strongly opposed” to it. Yet factory farming makes up more than 70% of meat farming in the UK, and there are more than 1,000 huge factory farms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The largest poultry “mega-factory farm” can hold as many as 1.4 million chickens and other birds. For most of her life, 13-year-old Lowri Moore has worn glasses. She loves her glasses now, but this wasn’t always the case. “I definitely felt, growing up, a bit self-conscious,” she told The Week Junior. Lowri campaigns for people who wear glasses to be represented positively in the media. When she was nine, Lowri wrote to Disney about her wish to see a princess in glasses. When Elizabeth Wathuti was asked to speak at Cop26 (a world climate change conference held in Scotland in 2021) she gave a speech that was so powerful it made US President Joe Biden stop and listen. Wathuti grew up in the forests of Kenya and has seen what climate change is doing to her home. It inspired her to set up the Green Generation Initiative, an organisation that teaches children how to protect the environment. Samson Kambalu grew up in Malawi and has been an artist since he was seven. Now living in England, Kambalu teaches art at Oxford University and is the first African artist to unveil a sculpture on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square (an outdoor space in the centre of London). A new artwork is placed on the plinth every two years. Kambalu’s work features a statue of John Chilembwe who fought against British rule in Africa in 1915. Chilembwe wore a hat despite a rule forbidding Africans from wearing hats in front of white people. Scientists in Wales are fighting climate change (long-term changes in world weather patterns, including rising temperatures) with seagrass, a plant that grows in the sea. A new project is working with local communities to replant seagrass that has been damaged or destroyed by boats, pollution and tourism. Seagrass is good for the Earth because it absorbs and stores away lots of carbon dioxide, a gas produced by things like burning fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil). Carbon dioxide is a “greenhouse gas”. This means it traps heat from the Sun in the atmosphere and makes the planet warm up. Introduced into the UK in the late 19th century, the American grey squirrel caused a huge drop in the UK’s native red squirrel population. Grey squirrels live in gardens, parks and woods across the UK. They have a silver-grey coat, with brown faces and feet, a pale underside and bushy tail. Grey squirrels are larger than red squirrels and have smaller ears without tufts. They eat acorns, flowers, nuts, pine cones, shoots and tree seeds and are busy gathering food in autumn. A company in North Yorkshire, England, is using seaweed to fight climate change. SeaGrown manages the UK’s largest offshore seaweed farm. Seaweed is 20 times better than land plants at capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas that causes climate change. SeaGrown is also using seaweed to make environmentally friendly versions of plastic, soap and food for humans and cows. A new school made almost entirely out of wood is being built in Helsinki, Finland. The school, which won’t be ready until next year and smells of pine forests inside, is one of many wooden buildings in the capital city. It is part of Finland’s plan to become more environmentally friendly. Making buildings out of wood releases less carbon dioxide (CO2) than steel and concrete. American scientists have discovered that the noise woodpeckers make when they tap on trees is controlled by the same part of the brain that controls singing in songbirds. History was made on 27 September when NASA crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid on purpose. The goal of the mission, using the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) probe, was to find out if it is possible to change the direction of an asteroid’s path. Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the Sun (see panel). This one, named Dimorphos, is seven million miles away from Earth and not on track to hit it. NASA wanted to see if space rocks that might threaten Earth in the future could be safely moved away. Asteroids are ancient space rubble, left over from when the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago. NASA has identified 1,113,527 of them orbiting the Sun, some just a few metres across, others miles wide. Comets also orbit the Sun but they are made of ice and dirt. When they warm up they release dust and gas, which creates a “tail” behind them. Smaller pieces that break off asteroids and comets are called meteoroids. On 2 October, the 42nd London Marathon took place. More than 40,000 people competed in the 26.2-mile event through the city streets. Some were elite professional athletes, others ran in fancy dress to raise money for charity. Artists turn building into arcade game Not many people look at a building and think “Donkey Kong”, but that’s what Chris Schleyer thought when he saw the crisscrossed steel beams at the back of his apartment building in New Hampshire, US. I love tennis, so it was a real dream to be on court with my tennis heroes – and for Roger Federer’s last match. At 12, I was the youngest of the 24 ball kids. I was first up on court as the Laver Cup opened in front of a crowd of 17,000, which felt unbelievable.
