There have been power cuts in parts of Ukraine following new waves of Russian attacks using missiles (weapons launched through the air). Where were the attacks? The Russian missile attacks have taken place in several cities across Ukraine. Russia’s military has been deliberately targeting energy supplies in cities including Kyiv, the capital. Residents in more than 1,000 cities and towns have been left without energy, and water supplies are also affected in some of them. On 18 October, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that 30% of Ukraine’s power stations had been destroyed since 10 October. Russians forced to fight

Young men have been leaving Russia to avoid conscription. This is when people are ordered to join the army or face punishment, and Russia is using it in the war against Ukraine. This means nearly all men between the ages of 18 and 27 have been told they must join the army when they get a letter from the government. President Vladimir Putin said in September that around 300,000 men would be made to fight in Ukraine. This has been seen as a sign that the invasion is not going well. Many Russians are unhappy about conscription; following Putin’s announcement, there were protests in several Russian cities.…

China’s president chosen to lead again

On 16 October, the National Congress of the Communist Party of China began in Beijing. The congress is a meeting of China’s ruling political party. It is held to choose China’s new leaders and is due to finish on 23 October. The party leader is one of around 370 positions that will be chosen during the congress by around 2,300 senior party members. China is a one-party state, meaning that the Communist Party is the only political party allowed. Ordinary people in China do not get to choose who leads the country. The leader of China is President Xi Jinping. Most leaders of China step down after serving two five-year terms, but Xi is expected to be appointed for a third. Teachers given anti-racism training

The Welsh government has introduced anti-racism training for teachers so they can help pupils learn more about racism (when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their skin colour, culture or nationality), and the contributions that black and Asian people have made to the UK. The government hopes the training will also increase the number of black and Asian teachers in schools. A recent study shows that there are just 35 black and 75 Asian teachers in Wales, compared to 25,915 who are white. In 2021, Wales became the first UK nation to make teaching black and Asian people’s histories compulsory. However, some people think more could be done to tackle racism in schools. New chancellor scraps mini-budget

On 17 October, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer (the person in charge of the country’s money), Jeremy Hunt, announced that he will stop the tax cuts suggested in the Government’s recent mini-budget (a plan on how it would spend money). What did Hunt say? Hunt said that most of the planned cuts to taxes (money people give to the Government to pay for things like schools) now won’t go ahead. He also said that the money given to every household to help pay their energy bills will now stop for most people in April, rather than lasting for two years, as was proposed in the mini-budget. 24 October 2003 Last flight of Concorde On 24 October 2003, Concorde made its last passenger-carrying flight. Concorde was a type of jet plane that could travel at twice the speed of sound. Jointly built by Britain and France, it is still the fastest passenger plane ever to fly. The final fight carried 100 passengers from New York, US, to London. Concordes were once a symbol of technology and luxury, but people criticised them for being too noisy. They stopped flying in 2003.…

The rocket that will be used for the first space mission from the UK has arrived at its spaceport in Cornwall, England. Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne was built in the US. Its flight to space is expected to happen next month, carrying nine satellites into orbit. LauncherOne will begin its journey attached to a specially modified plane called Cosmic Girl. On 12 October, more than 40 politicians, celebrities and campaigners from the UK showed their support for 12-year-old Skye Neville’s “Kids Against Plastic Tat” campaign by adding their names to a special letter. The letter is addressed to the supermarket Tesco, asking it to stop selling magazines that come with low-quality disposable plastic toys attached. For the last two years, Neville has been campaigning to remove plastic from all comics and magazines sold in the UK. In 2021, she inspired the supermarket Waitrose to stop selling magazines that include disposable plastic toys. Tesco seemed close to following Waitrose’s example but it hadn’t changed its policy by the time The Week Junior went to press. Alaska, US “Bear force one” crowned fattest bear On 11 October, the winner of the 2022 Fat Bear Week was announced. This is an annual contest when people vote for the fattest bear at Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Bears eat a lot to gain weight before they hibernate in winter. This year’s winner was Bear 747, also known as Bear Force One, who weighed an estimated 635 kilograms. Paris, France Protests over rising costs Thousands of people protested in Paris on 16 October over rising costs. Organisers said it was a “march against the high cost of living and climate inaction”. Whether it’s putting your elbows on the table or talking with a mouth full of food, everyone has to watch their manners at some time. Manners have developed over thousands of years and are always changing. Around 100 years ago, children in the UK weren’t allowed to speak unless an adult spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in places like school councils and climate protests. Manners also mean different things in different countries. Slurping food is considered rude at some tables, but at others it’s a sign that people are enjoying their meal. When Tiana-Rose Akoh-Arrey was a little girl, a boy in her class made a joke about her Afro hair. Tiana felt hurt and frustrated. That insult, however, inspired her to write a story about her hair and she hopes it will empower other young people to love who they are. Tiana wrote My Afro: Twin Best Friends when she was seven. It tells the story of Tia and her best friend Aaoki, who has the same type of hair as hers, “while everyone else has straight, curly or silky hair.” In the book, characters Tia and Aaoki like to dress and style their hair the same, but Tiana’s own Afro hair can be hard to manage. People have been paying their respects to Robbie Coltrane, who has died at the age of 72. The Scottish actor and comedian appeared on TV for more than 40 years, but he was perhaps most famous for playing Hagrid, the kind-hearted half-giant at Hogwarts school. Starring in all eight Harry Potter films, Coltrane received lots of fan mail and was known for his kindness, warmth and sense of humour, especially when working with the young actors. “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on set,” said Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter.…

When João Stanganelli Junior retired, he learned to crochet to keep himself busy. Stanganelli, who is from Brazil, has a condition called vitiligo, where pale patches appear on his skin. This is caused by a lack of melanin, the chemical that gives skin its colour. Although the condition isn’t painful, it can affect a person’s confidence. When Stanganelli crocheted a doll with vitiligo as a present for his granddaughter, other people started to ask for dolls with vitiligo, as well as other conditions. More ponds make frog numbers jump

A 20-year project to dig more ponds in a part of A Switzerland has caused an explosion in the number of amphibians (animals that live in water and on land). It boosted the populations of more than half of the endangered species of frogs, newts and toads. Across the world, amphibians have been in trouble for years because of habitat destruction, disease and invasive species (species that come from somewhere else and take over). In Aargau in Switzerland, amphibians couldn’t live in some ponds because they were too small and had too many predators. In 1999, the situation facing amphibians – in particular the European tree frog – was so bad that people decided to create new ponds to give them more space to thrive. From 14 to 16 October, people were asked to visit their local waterway (river, stream or lake) and report on its condition. The Autumn Water Watch survey, created by the environmental group Planet Patrol, was the first nationwide study of the UK’s fresh water (not sea water). With its ragged orange-and-brown wings, the comma butterfly does a very good impression of a torn, dead leaf at this time of year, which often helps it escape the attention of hungry birds. It can be seen on sunny days well into November in England, Wales and southern Scotland, getting ready to hibernate for winter. Comma butterflies like woodland edges but also stop off to sip on the sugary juice of fallen apples, plums and blackberries in gardens and hedges. Chimps and gorillas are friends

New research has shown that gorillas and chimpanzees can be friends. In a forest in the Republic of the Congo, in central Africa, researchers from Washington University in the US studied the animals for 21 years. In that time they noted 285 interactions between chimps and gorillas – some lasting for several hours. The apes spent most of their time eating together, chasing each other, wrestling and play-fighting. Often, interactions occurred when a group of chimpanzees found a good meal and their excited noises attracted a family of gorillas. In 34% of the encounters, the animals went on to eat or look for different foods together. Some friendships lasted for years, with apes going straight to their friend whenever two groups met. Scientists have discovered that there is one more species of sloth than they thought. The maned sloth, which has a head that looks like a coconut, has just been divided into two species: southern maned sloths and northern maned sloths. Visitors to an arts venue in Glasgow, Scotland, now have the perfect reason to keep dancing as hard as they can – they’re creating renewable energy. The venue, which is called SWG3, has launched a system that uses the heat produced by dancing as a source of energy. The more energetically people dance, the more heat they create. Devices on the ceiling absorb heat from inside the club and transport it through pipes using a special type of liquid called a carrier fluid. The heat energy travels into 12 holes drilled into the ground to be stored 200 metres below. The 13th Doctor Who’s reign will come to an end on 23 October, when Jodie Whittaker has her final adventure. Therapy lizard calms visitors Taz isn’t a typical lizard. Rather than spending the days sunning himself and snacking on flies, he is a therapy lizard for a charity called Disability Support in Nottingham, England. The black and white tegu lizard seems to have a calming effect on all those who visit the charity’s community centre. With so much happening at the moment, it is lovely to celebrate something that has been with us all our lives: the BBC. Somalia, in East Africa, is experiencing its worst drought (long period without rain) in 40 years, which is harming crops and causing hunger. Many people have died. Lots of charities are working hard to raise money to help the people of Somalia, and you can do your bit too. Ideas include selling old toys or books; doing a bake sale; asking your friends and family to sponsor you to run or hike a certain distance; or offering to do a task for a neighbour such as raking up leaves in exchange for a charity donation (make sure you get a parent or guardian’s permission first, though).
