The event that killed the dinosaurs, called the K-Pg extinction, wiped out 75% of the species on Earth 66 million years ago. It is the most recent extinction event in history – but there have been others. The late Devonian extinction, for example, also killed 75% of life. Scientists think that as plants evolved, algae (a type of water plant) stole all the oxygen from the oceans, killing other life. The Permian-Triassic extinction wiped out 90% of species. The region now known as Siberia erupted in volcanoes that released carbon dioxide gas and heated the planet, making sea levels rise and rain to turn acid, killing a lot of plants.…
