Australian turtles go to school

Children in New South Wales, Australia, have been learning about turtles in a very hands-on way. The Turtles in Schools programme, led by Western Sydney University (WSU), has been organising trips for pupils to visit nearby wetlands where turtles live, and hosting turtles in classrooms. According to a study, Australian turtle species have fallen by as much as 91% in the last 40 years. The programme hopes to turn this around and create an “informed future generation that will take care of the environment.” One school, Presbyterian Ladies’ College, has a turtle pond and a hatchery (where baby turtles can hatch from eggs safely) that is open to other schools, too.
