Toadflax flowers into autumn

The common toadflax begins to bloom in June but its flowers continue to brighten grassland, roadside verges and hedgerows well into November. The plant grows throughout the UK. Its upright stems can grow 75 centimetres tall and have narrow pointed leaves. Toadflax flowers are tightly packed into a cluster on top of each stem and are a creamy yellow, with orange centres and long spikes at the bottom. The plant is a food source for buff-tailed and white-tailed bumblebees, common carder bees, honeybees and many species of fly. Nicknames for toadflax include “butter and eggs”. In the 17th century, people put toadflax leaves under their bare feet and between their toes to ward off fever.…
