Italy elects a new prime minister

On 25 September, Italy elected its first female prime minister, Giorgia Meloni. She won in a snap election (a vote called earlier than it was expected to happen) after Mario Draghi, Italy’s previous prime minister, resigned in July. Who is Giorgia Meloni? Giorgia Meloni is the leader and co-founder of Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), a political party in Italy (see panel). Meloni grew up in a working-class family in Rome, and has been in politics since she was 15. Meloni’s party wants to introduce strict controls over immigration to Italy (people coming to Italy from other countries) and does not support the rights of same-sex couples, such as gay marriage.
