New Conservative leader elected

On 2 November, Kemi Badenoch was chosen as the new leader of the Conservatives, the opposition party (see panel). She is the first black woman to lead a major UK political party. Who is Kemi Badenoch? Badenoch is the Member of Parliament (MP) for North West Essex, in England. She was born in London, grew up in Nigeria and moved back to the UK aged 16, where she studied A levels and went to university. She worked in IT (computer systems) and at a bank. Her political career began in 2015, when she became a member of the London Assembly, which examines the London Mayor’s policies to make sure they’re doing their job properly.
