Woodpigeons fly south
These plump birds are the UK’s largest species of pigeon, found in parks, gardens, woodland and farmland. You might recognise the “cooing” call of the woodpigeon. The birds are about 40 centimetres long with a 78-centimetre wingspan. They can appear clumsy and often take off with a great flapping of wings. Adult birds are mostly grey with white patches on their necks and wings, which you can see when they fly. Woodpigeons eat fruit, leaves and seeds and they can gobble up a lot because they store some of it in a “crop” – a pouch in their upper chest. At this time of year, they are often seen flying south in large flocks. It’s not known exactly where they are all going but many arrive in Spain and Portugal.…
