An explorer of the deep

Since she was eight years old, Dawn Wright has wanted to be an oceanographer. This is a type of scientist who studies the ocean. Now she is known as “Deepsea Dawn” and gets to explore the ocean during missions where she scans and creates maps of the ocean floor. Only 26% of the ocean floor is mapped in detail at the moment but Wright wants to change that. In 2022, she made history when she became the first black person to visit Challenger Deep, the deepest known point of the Earth’s seabed, exploring some unseen places. She said seeing what the ocean was like that deep down was “wonderful”.…
