Soaring to new heights

Pilot Zara Rutherford shares her journey round the world and plans for space travel.

At 19 years old, Zara Rutherford became the youngest woman to fly solo around the globe. Now 22 years old, she has written about her adventures in her new book, I Flew Around the World. Rutherford told The Week Junior that during her journey, “I met such unique and amazing people,” including NASA scientists doing climate-change measurements and a female rescue helicopter pilot. She also saw wildfires, a volcano and seals on an iceberg. On the entire trip she was accompanied by her trusty co-pilot, a cuddly toy called Miffy. Rutherford admits she found it hard being the only girl in her flying group when she was younger but she didn’t let that stop her.
