Flower patches bring cities to life

Have you seen dandelions on grass verges or tall grass sprouting in the middle of a roundabout? A recent study has found that wildflowers in towns and cities attract as many different species of insects as those growing in natural meadows out in the countryside. Researchers from Warsaw University of Life Sciences, in Poland, discovered that even small patches of grass scattered with wildflowers attract a high number of pollinating insects. Pollinators include bees, beetles, butterflies, flies, moths and wasps, which move pollen from one flower to another, helping plants to produce seeds. The study involved watching 10 wildflower areas in the centre of Warsaw (Poland’s capital city) and a larger, natural meadow in the countryside.
