A brief history of COP

COP was first held in 1995 in Berlin, Germany, and one has taken place almost every year since then. In 1997, leaders agreed to the Kyoto Protocol, which set targets for some countries to cut their greenhouse (climate-warming) gas emissions. Ten years later, this included all countries. In 2015, leaders signed a deal called the Paris Agreement. This aims to stop global temperatures from rising above an agreed level. The agreement includes a list of commitments countries must follow to achieve this. At each COP since 2015, countries check they are reaching their targets.…
