Thrilling boat race begins

Three British sailors are taking part in the Vendée Globe, one of the world’s toughest boat races. The event starts and finishes in Les Sables d’Olonne in France. Competitors, who are called skippers, must sail their boat by themselves down to Antarctica, around the huge continent and back – a distance of about 28,000 miles – without stopping. The famous race is held every four years and this year it began on 10 November. Samantha Davies, Sam Goodchild and Pip Hare are the British skippers joined by 37 others attempting to win the difficult event. The leading boats should finish after around 75 days.
