Huge coral find offers hope
Scientists working in the Pacific Ocean have discovered the largest coral ever recorded. The coral seems to be in good health too, which is offering hope to conservationists. On 14 November, scientists on a National Geographic expedition were exploring around the Solomon Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, when they saw what looked like a shipwreck. Divers discovered it was a massive coral and said it was like seeing “a cathedral underwater”. Corals are marine organisms made of thousands of tiny, living creatures called polyps. They connect together and create structures. The mega coral is believed to be about 300 years old and has been confirmed as the biggest in the world.
