The million-dollar AI artwork

On 7 November, a portrait of mathematician Alan Turing sold for more than $1 million (£789,000) at an auction in New York, US. An auction is a type of sale where possible buyers offer money. The person who offers the most money gets to buy the item. The portrait was unusual, though – it wasn’t created by a human. In fact, it was the first artwork by a humanoid robot to be sold at auction. The humanoid robot was Ai-Da, who was developed in 2019 by art gallery owner Aidan Meller and a robotics company.
