Mount St Helens erupts
The big eruption on 18 May 1980 actually began two months earlier, with small earthquakes and eruptions from mid-March. On the day itself, a larger earthquake made part of the mountain collapse, triggering the largest known landslide (a mass movement of rock and earth down a slope) in history. Afterwards, rock, ash, gas and steam exploded outwards. Bridges, homes and farmland were destroyed, along with 600 square kilometres of forest.
