The Natural History Museum (NHM) in London is asking governments around the world to do more to protect Earth’s most important areas of nature, after releasing new research. More than 190 countries are committed to achieving a target called “30x30” (see panel), which aims to protect more of the world’s land and oceans. Most countries trying to achieve this goal have released plans to expand protected areas but the NHM said this might not be enough. Its new research says 78% of land that is vitally important for human survival is far away from officially protected areas.
