Christmas lights up Hillsborough

Butterflies and baubles light up the castle’s grounds.

Christmas is coming soon to Hillsborough Castle, near Belfast, which is hosting a festive light show after dark from 1 December to 1 January. More than a million lights, from giant baubles to twinkling tunnels, will decorate the gardens and grounds. Father Christmas is there in his grotto, and stalls will sell hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and spiced drinks. Highlights of the show include the Royal Aurora neon trees installation, named by students from the nearby Beechlawn School. Aurora comes from “aurora borealis”, the formal name for the northern lights, an amazing natural light show that appears in the night skies in some of the most northern parts of the world during autumn and winter.
