Doggy paddle is the swimming stroke that many children start off with, and one that our canine companions master naturally. Now, some of the UK’s top swimmers are being drilled in doggy paddle ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Coaches are using the “freestyle doggy paddle” stroke to improve athletes’ core muscles, to strengthen them for other strokes, such as front crawl. Team GB coaches are even bringing in special “swim dogs” for athletes to watch the reach-and-pull technique of the stroke to improve their own arm and leg positions.
