On 4 October 1957, the world’s first artificial satellite was launched from Earth. Sputnik 1 was built by the Soviet Union, a country made up of Russia and its nearby neighbours. “Sputnik” means “travelling companion” in Russian. The satellite was the size of a beach ball and had four antennas. It circled the Earth every 96 minutes. After three months it fell back towards Earth and burned up in the atmosphere.
