How were the rats trained?

To begin with, the rats were taught to associate a clicking sound with a food reward. Later, they were put in a container with holes in the bottom, with scent samples underneath. The researchers wanted the rats to identify certain scents while ignoring others. A rat could point out a certain smell to the researchers by keeping its nose in a hole for three seconds. When the rats chose the right scent, they heard the click sound and were rewarded with food, so they learned which smells to identify over time.…
