Australian school wins building prize

A school in Australia has won the World Building of the Year prize at the 2024 World Architecture Festival. Architecture is the design of buildings. At a ceremony held in Singapore on 8 November, Darlington Public School, in Sydney, beat more than 220 other shortlisted buildings, including large projects such as airports, museums and skyscrapers. The school’s 1970s building has been transformed into a light and airy space with open-air terraces, a big basketball court and a community garden. The building is home to a nursery school and primary school for more than 500 pupils. The work was carried out in stages so the children could carry on going to school without disruption.
