Studying penguins in remote Antarctica

Dr Mairi Hilton tells us about her cool job.

The new book Jonty Gentoo: The Adventures of a Penguin by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is about a very special bird. Someone who knows how special gentoo penguins are is Dr Mairi Hilton, a wildlife biologist. In 2022, Hilton went to Antarctica to work for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) monitoring the gentoo penguin colony. “I almost didn’t apply because I thought there was no way that I was going to get it,” she told The Week Junior. Every year, a group of wildlife monitors stay at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island. “I’d always really wanted to go,” says Hilton.
