Is it ok to have a messy bedroom?

The state of your space can have a big impact on how you feel.

Hearing a parent or guardian say “Tidy your room!” is not unusual. Lots of family disagreements are caused by children’s messy bedrooms. Some say that teenagers tend to be untidy because they are still learning how to be organised. However, an unmade bed and cluttered floor can be stressful for the rest of the family. After all, it is part of the home your grown-ups work hard to look after. A study in 2021 found that clutter and managing it are “central and important to wellbeing”, and another study in the US found that a messy living space caused stress levels to rise, especially in women.
