Trump prepares for power

On 6 November, Donald Trump was announced as the winner of the US election. He will become the 47th US president in January 2025, taking over from Joe Biden. Trump was the US president between 2017 and 2021. What happened? Although polls (surveys predicting how people will vote) before the election suggested it would be very close, Trump, who represents the Republican Party, won the election comfortably. He received 312 Electoral College votes compared with the 226 won by the Democratic Party’s Kamala Harris. The Electoral College is chosen by the public’s votes. It is made up of 538 people (electors) who represent political parties. If a candidate receives 270 or more Electoral College votes, they win the election.
