9 May 1904 Steam locomotive makes speed record A steam locomotive (a vehicle that pulls trains) named City of Truro became the first one in Britain to go faster than 100 miles per hour. It was built by William Dean in Swindon, England. On 9 May 1904, while pulling the Oceans Mail train from Plymouth to Paddington in London, the locomotive reached around 102mph.
