Discovering the Denisovans

The first evidence for a previously unknown human species was found at Denisova cave in the Altai mountains of Siberia, in Russia, in 2008. When scientists found a 50,000-year-old finger bone, they tested its DNA (a complex chemical structure that tells living things how to grow and develop) to learn more about it. The DNA turned out to be distinct from both modern humans and their closest extinct relatives, Neanderthals. Instead, it came from another extinct species, which seems to have split from the Neanderthals about 400,000 years ago.…
