Eight wildcat kittens have been born at a conservation centre in Scotland as part of a project aimed at bringing the species back from the brink of extinction. It’s hoped that the wildcat kittens can help to save an animal whose reputation for being ferocious and untameable has earned it the nickname “Highland Tiger”.
Scottish wildcats are members of the same family as domestic cats (the ones people keep as pets). They look like domestic striped tabby cats but they are bigger, more muscular and have thicker tails. Wildcats would once have been found living in woodlands throughout Britain but habitat loss and hunting meant that by the 20th century they lived only in small numbers in northern Scotland.
