The United Nations (UN) has called for an end to the violence between Israel and Palestine. The UN is an organisation of 193 countries that takes action on human rights, peace and climate change. Since 10 May, more than 219 people have died and more than 1,440 have been wounded in Palestine, and 12 people have died in Israel. Why is there conflict? Jerusalem is a city in the Middle East that both Israel and Palestine claim as their capital and as a religious site (see panel). The conflict between Israel and Palestine goes back many years. Jerusalem is holy for Christians, Jews and Muslims. For Christians, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is sacred because many believe this is where Jesus was crucified, buried, and came back to life. For Jewish people, the Western Wall is holy because it is where a great temple once stood, inside which was the Holy of Holies. This was the most sacred site in Judaism, where it is said that the 10 Commandments that God gave to Moses were kept. For Muslims, the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque are holy sites. Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad travelled from Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, to this area in Jerusalem and then went up to heaven.…

China lands its rover on Mars

China has become only the second country, after the US, to land a spacecraft on Mars. On 15 May, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced that its Zhurong rover had landed on the Red Planet. Zhurong is named after the god of fire in ancient Chinese mythology. It was transported to Mars on board the Tianwen-1 spacecraft, which launched in July 2020. Tianwen-1 has been orbiting Mars since February this year, taking pictures of the surface to find the safest place for the rover to land. After a nine-minute descent, Zhurong landed in a part of Mars known as Utopia Planitia. It is thought there might once have been an ocean there. Over the course of 90 Martian days, Zhurong will study the planet’s surface and look for signs…

Major garden project opens in Salford, UK

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has opened a new garden in Salford, England, which it says will be “Europe’s biggest gardening project”. The RHS is the UK’s biggest gardening charity. It has five gardens open to the public in England. The others are in Devon, Essex, Surrey and North Yorkshire. The new garden, called RHS Garden Bridgewater, was meant to open last year but was delayed by the pandemic. The garden’s curator (the person who looks after it), Marcus Chilton-Jones, told the Guardian newspaper that this delay was “a blessing in disguise” because it gave them more time to prepare. The garden finally opened on 18 May. Bridgewater is the first RHS garden to be set up in a big city. The Salford location was chosen to attract more visitors…

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has apologised to the families of 10 people who were shot and killed during British Army operations in Ballymurphy, an area in Belfast in Northern Ireland, in 1971. What happened? In August 1971,10 people were killed in Ballymurphy when the British Army was stationed in Belfast. The deaths took place in five separate incidents during fighting and rioting in west Belfast in August 1971. The unrest was part of a violent conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles, which took place from around 1968 to 1998. The National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCOS) was the first group in Scotland to sing together on 17 May as restrictions were lifted. Most of Scotland now allows groups of up to 30 people to gather outdoors for singing. The 29 members of the NYCOS gathered on Calton Hill, in Edinburgh, at 6am to rehearse for the first time in 14 months. Volunteers tackle plastic waste

One of the biggest projects to tackle plastic pollution in the UK began on 15 May. In the first Million Mile Beach Clean, around 50,000 volunteers armed with buckets and litter pickers cleaned up beaches across the UK. The volunteers hoped to remove rubbish and litter from thousands of miles of coastline and areas of countryside in seven days. The Million Mile Beach Clean will continue throughout the year. The aim is for 100,000 volunteers each to walk 10 miles, cleaning places they love along the way. The campaign wants to address the “crisis” of plastic waste in the ocean that affects sea creatures and harms the environment. Kigali, Rwanda Basketball Africa League begins On 16 May, the Basketball Africa League (BAL) started in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali. The BAL is a basketball tournament featuring 12 teams from across Africa. It is being supported by the US National Basketball Association (NBA). The BAL was going to start in March 2020 but was delayed by the pandemic. Colombia Protests against the government People across Colombia have been protesting against the government for three weeks. At least 50 people have died and hundreds have been injured. Demonstrations began when the government suggested new taxes, which is money paid by most people to their government. Every year, millions of people visit the world’s ancient monuments, such as the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt (built around 2500BC), and Britain’s 4,500-year-old stone circle at Stonehenge. As the years pass, stones often start to crumble and things fall apart. The Great Sphinx has lost its nose. Various stones are missing or have fallen over at Stonehenge. The Colosseum in Rome has no floor covering its underground chambers. The director of the Colosseum, Alfonsina Russo, said that building a new floor “will give us back the same vision from the stage of the monument that it had in ancient times”. Tousin Chiza’s journey to singing fame has been hard. Known as Tusse, the 19-year-old singer will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, which was due to take place in the Netherlands from 18 to 22 May. Tusse was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in central Africa, and was separated from his parents at the age of five when they fled from war. Tusse went to Sweden as a refugee when he was eight and is due to represent the country after the public voted for his song Voices. “Sweden took care of me at an early age and I got to grow here.” Chiza told the BBC. “It’s the biggest thank you I can give.”…

“Well that’s it. Thank you very much for tuning in, goodbye, thank you for coming.” With these words, Ray Cordeiro, a 96-year-old DJ from Hong Kong, retired from his radio show on 15 May. He had hosted All the Way with Ray since 1970, and had worked in radio for more than 70 years. In that time Uncle Ray, as he was known, met some of the most famous musicians in the world. The Guinness Book of Records gave him the award for “most durable DJ” in 2000. Uncle Ray was known for his calm, low voice, and the flat cap he always wore. “I think I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he said in an interview.…

White-tailed eagle’s Norfolk return

White-tailed eagles will be reintroduced to Norfolk, on England’s east coast, to help establish a population of the birds in the region. It will be the second time that white-tailed eagles have been released in England. The project, which is led by the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, will oversee the release of 60 young birds over 10 years at Wild Ken Hill near King’s Lynn. It is hoped that this will lead to a small breeding population of between six and 10 pairs of eagles living there. White-tailed eagles, which have a wingspan of around 2.5 metres, used to be widespread across the UK. The last ones in the UK survived in Scotland until about 100 years ago. A bright orange toad that glows in the dark has been found in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. It was discovered by a team led by Ivan Sergio Nunes Silva from Brazil’s São Paulo State University and it is part of a group of at least 36 species known as pumpkin toadlets. The newly discovered amphibian has been given the Latin name Brachycephalus rotenbergae. As with other pumpkin toadlets, its bright orange colour is a signal to predators that their skin carries poisonous chemicals. When placed in ultraviolet light (a type of light that they can see but humans can’t) the toad’s skin glows – even in complete darkness. Scientists have discovered the first example of a dinosaur with senses adapted for hunting in complete darkness – the prehistoric equivalent of today’s night-time hunters such as barn owls. Researchers from the University of Oxford, in England and South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand used CT scans (a sort of 3D X-ray) to reconstruct the eyes and inner ears of more than 100 living birds. They compared them with those of extinct dinosaur species. Birds are closely related to dinosaurs, so comparing the features of their skulls can reveal shared characteristics. In this case, the team found that a desert-dwelling dinosaur called Shuvuuia had extraordinary hearing and night vision. The barn owl has many adaptations to help it hunt its prey, which is mainly made up of rodents such as mice, rats and voles. The barn owl’s hearing is among the most sensitive of any animal ever tested, which means it can hunt in complete darkness, relying on nothing but sound. However, its eyes are also twice as sensitive to light as human eyes, helping it to see better in the dark. The owl’s feathers are very soft and have a special shape that doesn’t disturb the air. Safe landing for SpaceX

Aerospace company SpaceX has launched and safely landed its new rocket, called Starship, for the first time. SpaceX was founded by billionaire businessman Elon Musk in 2002 and has pioneered the idea of reusable rockets that make reaching space less wasteful and expensive. On 5 May, the latest Starship, known as SN15, took off from a launch pad in the US state of Texas and climbed six miles over the Gulf of Mexico. Each of the three engines was then deliberately shut down in sequence, allowing SN15 to turn in midair and descend horizontally before reigniting and tilting the ship back into a vertical position for a smooth touchdown. Africa’s oldest human burial

An international team of researchers has discovered the oldest-known human burial in Africa. The remains of a child aged about two or three were found buried near the entrance of Panga ya Saidi, a large cave system in Kenya where early humans once lived. A study of the bones found that they were about 80,000 years old. The first signs of the remains were found in 2013 but they were so fragile that it took researchers four years to dig them out of the hardened earth. The bones were sent to the National Museum in Nairobi, Kenya, and to a laboratory in Spain for analysis. Scientists have developed a cricket bat made from bamboo instead of the traditional willow wood. Bamboo is an inexpensive, fast-growing plant. Willow needs to grow for 15 years before it can be harvested, and up to 30% of the wood gets wasted in creating a bat. The bamboo bat is heavier but stronger and could possibly hit the ball further. The use of bamboo bats in matches would require a change to the rules of cricket, but inventor Dr Darshil Shah said the new bat was still “in the spirit of the game”. Enjoy these stories? Leicester lift the FA Cup

On 15 May, Leicester City won the FA Cup for the first time. They beat Chelsea, who have won the trophy eight times, 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in London. Leicester had played in four FA Cup finals before this one but their last appearance was in 1969. Their fans were delighted finally to secure the historic silver trophy. Leicester’s nickname is the Foxes. Belgian player Youri Tielemans was Leicester’s goalscoring hero in the match. The midfielder netted Leicester’s winner with a long-range shot in the second half. Social network Facebook has run into trouble with its plans to build a new version of its Instagram app designed specially for young people under 13 years old. The company announced these plans in March but now a group of important legal officials in the US have written to Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg asking him to give up the idea. They say they are worried that an Instagram for under-13s will be used by young people who “are not equipped to navigate the challenges of having a social media account”. Paddle boarding is a fun watersport where you stand on a long board and use a paddle to row along the water. Beginners can quickly get the hang of how to balance and move. There are lots of places and clubs to try it in the UK. Paddle boarding, which is also known as stand up paddle boarding (SUP), can be done in lakes, rivers and the sea. It’s more difficult in the sea because of tides and winds. It’s a good idea to visit a local paddle boarding club to get started. How much is a session? Hiring a paddle board, paddle and life jacket from a club is likely to cost around £10 to £20 for an hour’s session. Having an instructor with you to offer expert advice and help could cost more. With the help of an adult, search online for a club near you and get in touch. The club should be able to organise a beginner’s session for you. Will I fall in the water? It’s very likely, so be prepared to get wet! One day a year, a door is said to appear in a rock on the lakeside. For those who find it, the doorway leads to a wonderful garden on the invisible island.
