21 May 1932 First woman to fly solo across the Atlantic On 21 May 1932 Amelia Earhart landed her plane in Northern Ireland after travelling 2,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. Setting off from Newfoundland in Canada, Earhart took just 15 hours to complete her solo flight, becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross from the US government. In 1937, Earhart and her navigator, Frederick J. Noonan, attempted to fly around the world. Unfortunately their plane disappeared and Earhart was never found.…
