Labour wins big in local elections

Voters in some parts of England elected new councillors on 4 May. The Labour Party gained 643 councillors while the Conservatives lost 957. What do councillors do? Councillors are people who represent their local area (known as a ward), and decide how services such as schools, rubbish collection and libraries are run. They often represent a political party like the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats or the Green Party. There are around 20,000 councillors in England in 6,904 wards. What happened? People voted in 230 areas around England, to choose 8,000 councillors. These were the biggest local elections since 2019 and they were important because a general election will have to take place by the end of January 2025.
