Inside Indonesia’s new capital city

A huge new capital is being built on the island of Borneo.

In 2019, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, announced that Jakarta would be replaced as the country’s capital city. Last year, the government began to build a new city called Nusantara. When it is finished, Nusantara will be nearly twice the size of the whole of London. Where will the city be built? Nusantara will be on the island of Borneo, 600 miles from Jakarta, which is on the island of Java. Indonesia is part of the world’s largest archipelago (group of islands). The country is made up of around 17,500 islands in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Indonesians call Borneo “the lungs of the world” because it has the country’s largest and oldest areas of tropical rainforest.
