Rowan trees fluff out with blossom
This hardy tree is most common in the north and west of the UK, and likes growing in mountainous areas, such as the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands. Rowans can grow up to 15 metres high and their smooth bark is greyish brown. The trees have long, oval leaves with a jagged edge, arranged in pairs opposite each other on a branch, with one leaf at the end. Rowans bloom in May and June. Each flower has five cream-coloured petals and the blossom grows in fluffy clusters. The tree has bright red berries in autumn. In Celtic (a culture and language connected to Scotland, Wales and Ireland) rowan translates as “wizards’ tree” and it was once planted outside homes to protect people from evil.…
