Labour success in local elections

On 2 May, local elections took place across England and Wales. Millions of voters took part. What were the elections for? This was the public’s chance to vote for councillors (the people who represent the public on local councils). There are different types of councils, including borough councils, county councils and assemblies, and they manage things like schools, libraries, parks and recycling. On 2 May, 2,661 councillors on 107 English councils were up for election. There were also mayoral elections in 11 cities or regions. In England and Wales, there were 37 elections for police and crime commissioners, who supervise the police in their areas. There were no local elections in Scotland or Northern Ireland this year.
