Rashmi Sirdeshpande is the BookTrust charity’s latest “writer in residence”. The BookTrust helps children from all backgrounds to get into books and reading. When the BookTrust invited her to take on the job, Sirdeshpande jumped at the chance because, she says, “The role is about encouraging reading, and research shows that reading has a huge impact on children’s life chances.” Sirdeshpande started out as a lawyer. Then, after winning a writing competition, she had her first book published and began writing for all ages. When Sirdeshpande joined BookTrust this March, she wanted to focus on non-fiction books. “I love reading and writing them, and I’ve seen the difference they make to readers,” she told The Week Junior.
